The Jeep swerved unto a familiar cut stoned path that led to the house where they’ve lived their entire childhood. The memories resurfaced to the front lines of their minds as the vehicle rolled to a stop. It had changed a lot since then, the boards were rotting and the it was completely overgrown with weeds with thick vines draping over the structure. It had also changed as the kind- hearted, warm and gentle woman, Aunt Aubry was no longer here in the physical state. She had left for the heavens, her dying wish; the reason we have returned.
Khloe wrapped her hair into a pile at the top of her head, her thick curls falling out in a few places. ”We should hurry and get inside, The wind out here is horrid”
As Elias heaved the final suitcase out, The door of the house swung open pouring light unto them. The silohuette in the door frame was that of Hortense, He was a short stumpy man , bald. He walked with a limp and despite his appearance , he was a lovely person.
“Hortense!” Khloe shouted ,”You old hag!” Hortense started forward with his limp and his rumbling laughter.
“KayBug, Eli , wasn’t expecting you lads till tomorrow.”
“Did we come at a bad time?” Elias asked
“Have a lady waiting don’t you? Skipped right pass the grief stage, no remorse” Khloe said, shaking her head.
“Still have that sharp tongue I see kaybug.” Said Hortense “Well come on , Get your arses inside.”
‘You should probably get that checked out.’
He looked at me for a second then focused on the road again
‘But then you’d miss the opportunity to nurse me back to health.’ He said with a smile in his voice. I ignored his sassy remark.
‘Are you sleeping, eating well?’
He looked around at her again, a smile tugging at the side of his lips
‘That’s nice, you care about my welfare or is that sarcasm I hear coating that sentence.’
‘I’m being completely serious Elias, are you?’
He sucked in a deep breath that answered my question. He hasn’t.
‘Alright you Devil, if you must know. I haven’t been exactly sleeping well for quite a few nights now.’
‘What’s keeping you up?’
He glanced at her again as his hands tightened on the leather steering which made his knuckles appear bigger.
I sleep for a good half hour and then this intense light just comes and pierces me with its sharp rays. It blinds me and I stumble around with my forearm over my eyes unable to see anything, nothing is clear and everything is chaos, I’m lost, vulnerable and weak. The air is hot and warm thirsty for hydration. I finally fall to my knees, surrender I can’t take much more of this knife like light and like a victorious champion it finishes me off choking me on its light, its warmth, Its fire the heat burning my skin until I burst up in flames, Then it is pitch black, Dark and I am the light surrounded by shadows.
Khloe applauds “Excellent performance.” She continues to clap “Encore, Encore.” She says as she imitates the sound of a large crowd going wild at a concert.
“Are you serious? Are you being totally serious right now? This isn’t funny” He shouted “I knew you’d act like this” he says in a much lighter tone.
Khloe clears her throat and lowers her head, fondling with her hair lying on her lap, twirling it between her fingers. She looks up and clears her throat again and turns to him.
“I’ve been having dreams too but it’s the total opposite of yours, it’s like the dark swallowed me and I was made of shadows.”
“It’s not hard to believe you’re associated with darkness.” Elias said with no remorse
He turned the key in the ignition and it started with a roar, jerking violently and shaking all it contains wildly about. This did not suit my style of transportation but I didn’t complain. Instead I sat back and tried to get my cigarette flaming again, which was close to a stub.
“You know I hate that nasty habit of yours” Elias scolded and plucked the stub right out of my mouth and tossed it over the window.
“I’m an adult now, remember?”
“I’m still the oldest, mother birthed me first, do you remember that?”
“I’m not a child and would you please stop referring to yourself as ‘older’ , It was only a mere 3 minutes Elias and you could also start a fire with that cigarette you carelessly flung through the window , how very irresponsible of you.”
He was annoyed; he slammed his foot hard on the brake forcing our bodies to jolt forward. I cackled as he exited the jeep in search of the treacherous and deadly cigarette which he probably wouldn’t find. Out of the two of us, he was the one with the heart of marshmallow, It was such an easy task to get on his bad side. A mischievous thought bounced around in my head and then I quickly climbed over to the driver’s seat and re started the engine. “Let’s see how fast you can run oh brother of mine!” I shouted over the racket the vehicle made as I twisted the key. I sped off and he raced after the jeep. I hope he could hear how raucously I was laughing, I whipped my head around, and he was almost close to catching the rear of the jeep so I hit the brakes. His body smacked it with a thud and he staggered back like a drunken old man. When he found his balance he sighed and rubbed his temples while hanging his head low. He slowly made his way to the driver’s door and started the engine again.
His face looked hard as if he were clenching his teeth in his mouth. The moonlight washed out the color of his chocolate skin making him seem gloom. He also looked like he’s lost a lot of sleep; I was just beginning to study him intently. The dark circles under his eyes seem to magnify, his lips where chapped and his dark curls matted on the side of his head, blood oozed from it and slid down to the side of his face almost reaching his chin. He looks absolutely horrifying.
Five more minutes and he’s late I thought. I became increasingly impatient as the seconds ticked by. This always works I thought fishing a pack of cigarettes and a lighter from my knapsack. I quickly lighted it and sucked in the sweet taste of the tobacco, it immediately served its intended purpose releasing all the tension that was knotted and laced within my bones.
I watched the smoke in the night air as it turned and twisted like a belly dancer. Something caught the attention of my ear, the crunching sound of footsteps on the graveled path coming towards me slow and steady. 9:58 and he’s still not here. The footsteps seized and all I could hear were the crickets in the surrounding bushes.
“It’s pretty late for a treasure like you to be out here all by yourself, is it not?” His accent was of a British origin
“That shouldn’t concern you, furthermore, your presence was not requested here so please, escort yourself to wherever it is needed.”
“You should watch that mouth of yours; you might get yourself into some very serious business doll.”
That’s what did it. I swiftly removed my silver pistol from its leather sheath on my hip under my linen shirt and shoved it right under his chin resting on his throat.
“Please leave before you end up speechless.”
He smirked and looked down on the pistol at his throat. He reversed and walked away not the least bit threatened by my words. I didn’t think on it much, he was probably a lunatic living on the streets. A vehicle entered at the top of the road with its headlights pouring pools of light in front of it. Alright, Finally I thought. It gently ambled down the graveled path and stopped, the engine shut off and Elias hopped from it. He marched over to where I was standing with his arms folded then he slapped his palm to his face.
“Just what are you doing with that pistol? No, forget it, I don’t want to know.” The surprise had left his voice by the end of his sentence
“10:04 you’re late, Thanks for being punctual.”
“And it’s always nice to see you sister deary.” Elias said while heaving her bag into the trunk of the jeep and then making his way back to the driver’s seat. He glanced over at Khloe, “buckle up please; this ride isn’t exactly going to be smooth.” I ignored his comment and strapped myself in.
